Hair & Make-up:

Annie Makeup List

Hello Annie Families!—I am the makeup/hair coordinator for the show, and I would appreciate your help assisting your cast member(s) to get the necessary makeup and hair supplies and to follow some important directions about hair and makeup for the show.

To help prevent spreading illness, it’s very important that the children use only their own makeup, hair supplies, and brushes/sponges/applicators.  What brands you choose is up to you; you need not spend a lot of money on high-end department-store brands; drug store/grocery store national brands are usually fine.

Parents/Caregivers:  please do not give children your own makeup to use, unless you’re sure it meets the specifications below.  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT MAKEUP FOR THE STAGE NEEDS TO LOOK DIFFERENT FROM MAKEUP APPLIED FOR EVERYDAY USE. If you have any problems getting supplies, or if you have any questions, please contact me (phone and e-mail below) or Mrs. Parker.  I’m happy to provide recommendations or additional information.

BASE:  Everyone needs base/foundation so that your skin tone appears natural under theatrical lighting.  Choose a color base that is about the same as your own skin tone, or a bit darker (if you have light to medium skin color). Actors with darker skin tones should look for the closest match to their own skin color.  Liquid foundation is better than crème for our use; do not use the new mineral powders.  For actors this age I suggest base that is oil-free and fragrance-free.  Base can be applied with your fingers or a sponge.  Even, smooth coverage of the entire face is important, right up to the hairline.  BASE SHOULD BE APPLIED NOT ONLY TO THE FACE, BUT BLENDED DOWN ONTO THE NECK, TO INSURE A NATURAL LOOK.

EYES:  Your eyes are the most important part of your face, and they need to be very visible to the audience.  Everyone needs eyeliner and mascara.  Please see specific details, and additional requirements below.

--If you have blond, red, or light-to-medium brown hair/eyebrows, you should use a matching eyebrow pencil to emphasize/define brows.  Apply lightly—do not draw a line over your brows.  Use the side of the pencil, shading against the grain to color to root and add texture to brows.

--Female City Goers only can use eye shadow (blue/green/purple families only; no deep or intense shades).  Choose a powder (no crème); apply with small angle brush or applicator sponge on lid; use lighter/highlight color directly below eyebrow

--Use eyeliner—top and bottom.  I recommend cake (applied with water on a brush), or tube liquid (if the product is quick-dry and the brush included is a good one, and gives a fine line).  Soft pencils can also be used, but they smudge and fade, so be careful.  You get a better, longer-lasting line with cake or liquid.  Do not use hard, dry pencils for eyeliner—eye lid tissue is too soft for these to work well.  Brown (for blonds/light brown/red hair) or black only.  Watch out for making lines that are too thick—these actually make the eyes less visible!

--Use black mascara.  Apply to top and bottom lashes.

CHEEKS:  Everyone needs blusher.  Use powder (not crème).  Apply with larger brush.  Looking straight ahead, imagine lines running straight down your face from the middle of your pupils.  Do not cross inside those lines towards your nose with the blusher.

Boys:  Choose a color in the bronze/darker orange family.  Apply on cheekbones and slightly below into the hollow for healthy look.

Girls:  Choose a color in the medium/darker pink family.  Apply from the imaginary line mid-face diagonally up and outward across the cheekbone area, but not beyond the end of your eyebrows.  Do not extend into the hollow below cheekbones, or upward into the eye socket area.

LIPS: Everyone needs lipstick.  I highly recommend the use of a lip liner brush for precise application of lipstick.  Outline the entire lip line first, then fill in.  You can use lip liner pencil if you prefer (choose same color as lipstick), but still apply lipstick with a brush to stay inside the line.  NO LIP GLOSS—LIPSTICK ONLY

Orphans/Servants: Choose a color in the medium pink (but not magenta) family (for light to medium hair and skin tones); or darker pink/light red family (for darker hair and skin tones)

City Goers and Older Female Characters: Red

All Boys: Choose a color in the medium tan/bronze family

HAIR

Everyone needs to bring their own hairbrushes/combs, pins/elastics, and hairspray.  DO NOT SHARE HAIR BRUSHES OR HAIR SUPPLIES.

Orphans:  Messy pigtails, ponytail, or short styles.

Servants:  Longer hair in neat buns; shorter hair may need to be sprayed/pinned.  Please consult with Mr. Trippett or Mrs. Parker for specific instructions.

City Goers: Neat, age-appropriate hairstyles (for your character).
